baby pramThe transportation of infants and designs implemented by varying cultures can be seen throughout history. Most of history shows various types of sling being used a s a method of carrying the child close to the body, The pram, short for perambulator, was a quite new design when it was introduced. The pram for babies has been in use in the west since the Victorian era as a form of transport for children. The simple design evolved throughout the years and the pram developed into several different versions such as the carrycot which is detachable and the buggy or stroller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_transport)

The baby stroller has become a more popular type of pram in the west than the previously traditional Victorian based design. Developed by a gentleman by the name of William Kent in 1733 by request of the duke of Devonshire, the first stroller design of pram was a shell shape basket on wheels. In 1889 the first reversible pram was created so that the baby could face towards the parent allowing the mother or father to see the child while walking. Initially these baby carriages were only used by the very wealthy, by the 1920’s they modern style of baby carriage was becoming more accessible to the average family.

The modern prams and strollers as we know them came about thanks to the redesigns by Owen Mclaren who worked on the older structure for his sister who often complained of the difficulty in long distance travel with a traditional pram. By the 1980’s there had been many developments with safety features, collapsible construction and accessories to entice the parent to buy newer and better prams for their child.
